Archers back under cover

THE final autumn weekend of archery proved to be more a preview of winter, with the Blue Lake Archers deferring to an all-indoor archery weekend.

Both Friday night and Sunday afternoon defaulted to the Australian 18-metre rounds, the additional practice proving fruitful for introducing more of the tournament procedures to the newer archers while retaining the relaxed atmosphere of a club level event.

Friday proved to be a good result for the club’s established archers who have had their work cut out for them by the surge of newer archers having a slight handicap score advantage as the system settles them into the rankings.

Garry Jacques is the only founding member of the club still competing and had a memorable Friday night on the line.

His adjusted scores put him over the benchmark of 300 points and resulted in him bagging the wins for both rounds.

Alex McDonnell was runner-up in the initial round and Paul Freeman filled the roll in the second round.

Adverse weather may have put the Sunday outdoor round off, but the promise of the comfort of the indoor venue drew an excellent turnout that had the shooting line over capacity, invoking the “shooting in details” system.

Callum Oschar had qualified for his handicap score rating after his last event and did not squander the chance to see his name at the top of the list in round one, equalling his personal best in the process.

The point spread for the next four archers could have seen any one of them in the runner-up position.

Dale Tschirpig pipped the group to fill the runner-up spot.

Tschirpig, Seth Delaney, Nash Radford and Matt Delaney all held only a one-point advantage over the next placing.

The final round of the weekend put Tschirpig into the top spot, with Fiona Allison making a charge up the finishing order from the first round to finish her weekend on positive note.

Indoor archery continues at the Blue Lake Gymnastics Club, Malseed Park, Friday at 7pm, followed by outdoor archery at Corriedale Park from 12.30pm Sunday.
