VETERAN golfer Richard Kuhn was in fine form in Saturday’s stroke competition at the Blue Lake Golf Club with his nett 67 claiming the win.

In his better days Kuhn was a single-figure A Grade golfer but has seen his game slip back to where he now plays off 13, but can still string together a good game.

With his unique driving style, Kuhn, despite his age, still has the length to get him out of trouble.

He set up his win with a birdie on the par 5 third hole and turned with a two-under 39.

The only hole to give him any trouble was the roadside 13th where he had a double-bogey, but that was the only hiccup on his way to a closing 41 for a round of 80-13-67 to remind him of the golfer he once was.

There was a three-way count-back to decide the winner in A Grade, with James Roughana, Colin Ferguson and Shaun Phillips all finishing on nett 69.

It eventually came down to the one hole to decide the winner, with the 15th the difference.

Eventual winner Roughana birdied the 15th for a total of 23 points over the last six holes, while both Ferguson and Phillips double-bogeyed that same hole, the former having 24 over the last six and Phillips 28 over the same holes to finish in that order.

Roughana also birdied the 17th hole, while Ferguson birdied the 14th on his way to an inward 36.

There was no count-back needed in B Grade, with Smokey Von Duve taking the win with his nett 69.

Von Duve was out of the barrier early with a birdie on the first hole, but immediately gave that back with a double on the second.

Another double on the sixth hole saw him turn with 43 points and he was eyeing off a possible win.

A solid back nine with five pars looked good, before another double on the last hole took a little gloss off what was a very solid round.

He still finished two strokes clear second.

In second place was another veteran in John Millhouse.

He had his struggles over the front nine, but then banked a solid second with an impressive 39 for a round of 84-13-71.

Third place was snapped up by Fred Gould with a nett 72.

It was a roller-coaster round for Gould, with some good ball striking mixed in with some average golf, but he was still happy to take the minor placing.

The same could be said for C Grade winner Kym Vaughan, his front nine like a box of chocolates.

He opened with a par, tripled the second hole, doubled the third and then birdied the fourth to show the potential is there, scrambling his way to a none-too-shabby 44 points.

While the birdies and pars dried up on the back nine, his nett 70 was still three strokes better than the chasing pack.

Leading that pack was Keiren Weistra and Peter Mikelsen who tied for second with nett 73’s.

Weistra can thank a birdie on the 17th hole for the win in a tight count-back.

Place getters on the day included Zeick Dalton 70, Michael Watts 71, Stephen Easterbrook 72, Bryce Smith, Damian Dixon, Steve Jelly, Garth Ransom 73, Marc Dalton, David Dowie, Simon Lalich, Rod Heinrich 74 and Stephen Smith on 75.

Jake Matthews and Watts took out the pro shots, while Brayden Lane won the C Grade nearest to pin.
