THE Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association opened its 2023 season on Thursday April 13, with a mixed triples championship.

Formalities from president Stephen Von Duve kicked off proceedings and he invited patron Athol Malseed to roll the first jack of the season, while patroness Shirley Gifford delivered the first bowl.

The mixed triples championship had 23 team entries, with Post-Tel’s Paul Wilkinson, Zac Pearson and Fiona Pearson claiming the title.

A combined Saints and Post-Tel side of Shirley Gifford, Kevin Burn and Jennifer Bowering defeated Blue Lake Bowlers’ Kevin Jones, Emma Freemantle and Thomas Butler 9-4 in the first semi-final, while the eventual champions accounted in-house Post-Tel rivals Lorraine VanDen Hoogen, Jim Pearson and Craig Pearson eight shots to five.

The final had Pearson’s team scoring four on the first end but by the fifth end the Bowering-led rink was only one shot behind.

On the sixth end Pearson scored two shots to set up a three-shot lead going into the last end.

Bowering could only settle for one shot on the final end and fell short of victory, with Post-Tel’s Wilkinson, Zac Pearson and Fiona Pearson claiming the first association championship for the year 7-

5.

In the consolation final it was the clash of the two Commercial Club teams.

Doreen Oakley, John Oakley and Coehen Keppels defeated Phil Bliss, Graham Dent and Gaylene Leggett 10 shots to one.
