IT was a night of firsts for the Mount Gambier Pioneers Basketball Club on Friday night at Wulanda.

Mount Gambier played its first home games at its new home court and came away with two wins.

However, this historic event was not the only thing celebrated on the night as men’s coach Richard Hill, coached his 250th game for the Pioneers.

Pioneers president Tom Kosch said Hill has been the lynchpin for the Club’s success over the last decade.

“Having guided the men’s team to three National Championships, five SEABL Conference Championships together with being SEABL runner-up a further three times, SA Premier League runner-up in the Club’s sole appearance and runner-up in NBL1 South last year, is a record that the Club is incredibly proud and one which will be difficult for anyone to surpass,” he said.

Hill’s ability as a coach has also earned him coach of the year honours on three separate occasions.

Our basketball club is very appreciative of the commitment and contribution Richard (Hill) has made during his years with us,” Kosch said.

“I have no doubt we would not have achieved the success we have had without the focus and amazing dedication Richard has given our Club.”

After joining the Pioneers in 2012, Hill said he has enjoyed his time with the Pioneers and cannot believe more than a decade has passed.

“Being involved with a club where the board, our sponsors, fans and the community are tremendously supportive makes being part of the Pioneers a special experience,” Hill said.

“After a successful 2022, I am excited by our prospects for 2023.

“My milestone is not what is important – it is the continued development of the playing group which I am most proud.
