Handicap honours earned

RUNNERS-UP: Millicent's Andre' Reinders and Neil Whelan finished second in the Handicap Pairs Championships.

THE Millicent Bowls Club held its annual men’s handicap pairs championship recently, with the grand final held last Friday, April 7.

A field of 22 competed in the event, testing their skills over three 12-end games in a knockout format.

Competition was close and leading into the grand final three games finished drawn on the 12th end, forcing an extra end to be played to decide the winners.

In the end it was the pairing of Neil Whelan and Andre Reinders who booked a meeting with eventual champions Kym Stewart and Steve Skeer.

Due to the lateness of the final games the decider was held over until April 7.

With a few days to prepare both teams came out firing in the grand final.

Whelan and Reinders had to give Stewart and Skeer a two-shot start based of the handicap.

As such scores started at 8-6 before the first bowl was played.

At the eighth end Whelan and Reinders scored a four to put them one shot up, but when their opponent scored one shot on the following end scores were locked at 13 all.

With plenty on the line, Stewart and Skeer scored a four, followed by a two on the following end, which was enough to push them over the line and claim the 2023 handicap pairs title.
