Championship heats up

THE quarter finals of the 2023 Belgiornos Cafe Women’s Handicap Championships teed off last week at the Blue Lake Golf Cub, with a stableford competition for those not in competing in the championships.

Perfect Autumn weather greeted the players, all keen to advance another round.

Top qualifier Lee-Anne Medhurst faced reigning handicap champion Kate Hommelhoff. off playing off a 23 handicap, Medhurst had to give six strokes to Hommelhoff, who made good use of the advantage, turning to the 10th hole 5-up.

Another two wins and two squared holes clinched the victory 7/5.

Dianne Perryman and Sue Agars were both off a 19 handicap and it was Agars taking an early lead, 2-up heading to the back- nine.

Perryman won the 11th hole, then there were a couple of halved holes, before Agars won another three holes to finish with a 4/3 victory.

Rosemary Martland had to concede four strokes to Helen Stratford, with the latter able to keep the score to even after the first nine holes.

However, Martland took control and won three holes before Stratford had a win with a birdie on the par three 14th.

A win with a par on the 16th hole saw Martland move to the 17th 1-up and taking the win 2/1.

Playing off 29, Trudy Herbert was pitted against Josie Ashby off 20.

With an extra nine strokes Herbert certainly made use of them on the outward nine holes, turning all square.

Four squared holes kept Herbert in the game, but only a win on the 15th against Ashby’s wins on the 11th, 12th and 17th saw Ashby with the victory 2-up.

Top qualifier in Division 2, Carol Melhuish showed it was no fluke and took the win 8/7 from Lesley McPherson.

McPherson could not stop the onslaught from Melhuish who was 6-up turning to the back- nine to go on and win the 10th and 11th.

It was a close matchup between Dianne Allen and Johann Gogan, with two strokes given to Allen who outplayed Gogan and was 4-up after nine holes.

Then Gogan dug deep to win the next three holes, four squared holes, a win on the 15th and it was Gogan’s game 1-up.

Another close game was between Jaynee Oberer and Lyn Annand , with one stroke going Annand’s way.

After the outward nine Annand was 1-up then Oberer turned the tables winning the next four holes.

Annand was able to halve a hole, claim two wins and another halve, with Oberer having a win on the 18th to finish 2-up.

Due to illness Lyn Gill had to forfeit to Lucy Richards.

Birdie prizes to Annette Ford 14th hole and chip-in ferret prizes to Geraldine Scott second hole, Ford 14th, Cherryl Hill 17th.
