A STROKE competition and second qualifying round of the Belgiornos Cafe Handicap Championships was well attended at the Blue Golf Club last week.

The weather and a well-presented course saw 28 women keen to post good scores to be eligible for the final eight in both divisions and with one more qualifying round to go, the best two of three rounds will be the deciding factor.

The stroke competition was sponsored by Sorrentos Cafe and Division 2 players took the accolades for the best scores posted for the day, with first, second and third all playing under their handicaps.

The score of the day came from Vivienne Wilson, with a resounding nett 66.

The daily scratch rating was 72 and the winner in Division 1, Cherryl Hill was also under her handicap, signing for 94/23/71.

She had 49 strokes on the outward nine, including a par on the ninth hole and 45 strokes on the inward nine, with a par on the par 5 17th.

Second place went to handicapper Dianne Perryman, 91/18/73, who also signed for 49 on the outward nine, but managed to shave several strokes on the back with a 42, which included pars on the 12th, 15th and 17th holes.

Kate Hommelhoff rounded out the podium with 104/29/75, having just dropped into Division 1.

Hommelhoff had a slow start on the outward nine, blowing out to 58 strokes, but was able to dig deep and have a 46, a massive 12 strokes less on the inward nine.

It was a great turnaround and included pars on the 13th, 15th and 18th holes to help her win a three-way count-back from Geraldine Scott and Lee-Anne Medhurst, both with 98/23/75.

Division 2’s winner, Vivienne Wilson’s score of 106/35/66 will certainty put her in a good position in the final eight.

Splits of 53/48 amounted to Wilson finishing six under her handicap and will attract the attention of the handicapper before her next outing.
