Depleted field but strong results

DUE to the running of the annual Southern Ports Golf Week last week, it was a small contingent of women left at the Blue Lake Golf Club contesting the fourth and final round of the Sorrentos Summer Trophy.

The stableford competition was played in cool, mild autumn conditions but unfortunately low scores were the order of the day.

Helen Stratford managed to take the winning voucher from fellow playing partner Rosemary Martland, both carding 29 points to force a count-back.

Playing off a 17 handicap, Stratford had splits of 15/14, with pars on the second, fifth and 16th holes and although she recorded no wipes, eight one-points scores did not help.

Playing off 14, Martland had splits of 16/13 and although she hit well, with pars on the third and fifth holes and just two wiped holes, it came down to too many missed putts.

Lyn Annand was the Division 2 winner, signing for 30 points.

Off a 34 handicap, she struggled on the front nine, only scoring 12 points, but was able to play to her handicap on the back nine to score 18, which included a four-pointer on the dog-leg 15th hole.

Second-placed Jaynee Oberer trailed by just one stroke.

Her 20 points on the front nine was a solid start and included four three-pointers to show promise, but it was not to be, with trouble on the back nine for just nine points.

Nearest to pin second-shot winner was Martland and the pro-shot winner was Stratford.

A chip-in ferret on the first hole won a chocolate bar for Annand.

A special mention goes to the Blue Lake winner’s in the Southern Ports Golf Week, with congratulations to Ronda Edwards in the mixed pinehurst foursomes, paired with Millicent’s Mark Pretty were the back-to-back gross winner’s.

Edwards, Geraldine Scott, Lee-Anne Medhurst and Karen Panagopoulos were the winner’s of the women’s nine-hole Ambrose with a score of 29.6 nett.

Overall winner of the 56-hole stableford event and Veteran for C Grade was Lynda Nannings.

Meanwhile a par competition was played on Saturday and favourable weather reflected in the close results.

Stratford was pleased with her score of 2-up although wipes on the seventh and ninth marred what was otherwise a unblemished round, with pars on first, second, 15th and 16th holes and the rest halved.

Second place went to Martland, who finished 1-down, with pars on the second, fourth and fifth holes, but too many wipes which cost her the outright win.

A highlight was a birdie on the par 3 14th hole.

Stratford won a ball for the best back nine score.
