Mount Gambier swimmers impress at Wulanda

LAST weekend saw the SA Country Swimming Championships held at the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre where several Mount Gambier swimmers made their mark.

The meet was hosted by the Mount Gambier Swimming Club for the first event at the brand new complex.

Darcy Hodges from the Blue Lake Y Swim Club made a name for herself as she received the award for best female swimmer 11 years and under as well as the development trophy for the best female athlete for the meet.

Hodges won gold in the 50 metres breaststroke, 100 metres freestyle, 50 metres butterfly, 100 metres breaststroke, 50 metres freestyle and 100 metres backstroke.

Along with her several gold medals, Hodges won silver in the 200 metres individual medley and 50 metres backstroke.

She claimed the SA Country record for the 11 years 50 metres backstroke with a time of 38.41 seconds and set a new record in the 100 metre event as well.

The Blue Lake Y Swim club had a strong contingent of swimmers who impressed over the weekend.

Thomas Bignell broke the record for the SA Country Championship 18 years and over 50 metres breaststroke.

Bignell also claimed the bronze medal in the 200 metres breaststroke and silver in the 50 and 100 metres breaststroke.

Hayley Pearson claimed gold in the 50 metres freestyle, 100 metre breaststroke and 50 metre butterfly.

She also picked up several silver and bronze medals in a very impressive weekend at Wulanda.

Haydn Lowe claimed bronze in the 50 metre butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and 100 metre breaststroke as well as silver in the 50 metre freestyle.

Blue Lake Y’s Keira Flowers, Aleisha Pearson and Mikayla Pearson all picked up medals in individual events as well.

The club’s success was not limited to just the individual events as they claimed several medals in various relays as well.
