Christmas closes in

SINGLE STROKE WINNERS: Lucy Richards, Dianne Allen, Carol Megaw, Helen Myers. Absent - Lee Anderson.

AS the end of the year fast approaches, a little bit of summer and Christmas around the corner, 26 women enjoyed a single-stroke competition at the Blue Lake Golf Club last week.

It was Division 2’s Dianne Allen deserving of the accolades after posting the best score of the day with a resounding nett 66.

In Division 1 it was another Dianne also claiming bragging rights – handicapper Dianne Perryman – who posted 87/19/68 with consistent golf being rewarded after a outward nine 43, including pars on the second, third, fifth and ninth holes setting her up to capitalise with 44 strokes on the inward nine.

There was only one par on the 16th hole but it was good enough to push good friend Carol Megaw into second place by one stroke.

Megaw produced a solid scorecard of 98/29/69.

After a slow start on the outward nine with 54 strokes, which included a par on the fifth hole, she was able to shave off 10 strokes on the inward nine with 44 strokes and pars on the 11th, 14th and 15th.

Helen Myers was third, also playing under the daily scratch rating of 72.

She signed for 91/21/70 and all will be facing a handicap reduction before their next outing.

Another facing the handicapper will be Allen taking the honours in Division 2 carding 109/43/66 after using her handicap to perfection.

The outward 57 was a little on the high side but Allen redeemed herself with 52 on the inward nine which was certainly enough to cement her win from Lucy Richards (111/36/75), with pars and the fifth and 14th par three holes, also finding the back nine easier with splits of 60/50.

Lee Anderson (119/42/77) was third after a count-back from Lesley McPherson (108/31/77).

Anderson had splits of 62/56 and McPherson 52/56.

Nearest to the pin second shot winner’s were Elka Faure in Division 1 and Lyn Gill in Division 2.

The pro-shot winner was Josie Ashby, a birdie award went to Elka Faure, with ferret prizes to McPherson, Bev Pascoe and Allen.

On Saturday early morning golfers were greeted with mild conditions and by mid morning conditions were still sunny, but with a gusty cross-wind to contend with.

It was the men’s monthly medal stroke competition but fortunately the women’s forward tee-blocks made up for the long course set-up for the men.

Helen Stratford 90/20/70 was able to survive a count-back from Jorja Morale 95/25/70 to take top spot.

It was Stratford’s back nine of 42, with pars on the 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes that got her over the line aheqd of Morale’s 48 with a par on the 11th.

Outward nines were 48 and 47 respectively.

Rosemary Martland (84/13/71) would have been pleased with her card showing seven pars and one birdie and splits of 47/37.

A count-back was required from Geraldine Scott (95/24/71) who won nearest the pin.

Morale won the longest drive on the 18th hole with an enormous drive, up with the men’s B and C grade long drives.
