DISC golfers of the region will descend on the Crater Lakes Disc Golf Course for the 2022 Aussie Disc Golf Day on Sunday.

The event has players around the country compete against each other from their local courses for national bragging rights, without the cost of travel.

Mount Gambier Disc Golf president Mathew Weyers said numbers were looking good, with about 27 players registered.

“We have a few guys travelling down from Adelaide to play our event,” he said.

“I think four or five are travelling down to play here which is encouraging.”

It has been a busy week for the sport, following a training session held in Mount Gambier by professional Scott Stokely on Tuesday evening.

Stokely is a 17-time world and national disc golf and long distance champion and previously held the long-distance world record, with his clinic met by good numbers.

Due to road closures for the Crank the Crater cycling event, the tee-off time for Sunday’s two 18-hole rounds has been pushed back to around 11.50am.

The first of those rounds will also go towards the Mount Gambier Disc Golf December league day.

“Both rounds are 18 holes on the amateur course,” Weyers said.

“The first round still constitutes towards the club’s December league day, then there is the national side of the Aussie Disc Golf Day.”

Temporary baskets will be set up in the carpark at the corner of Bay Road and John Watson Drive from 10am, while registrations open at 10.45am and a player’s meeting will be held at 11.15am.

At the meeting, registered players will receive their Aussie Disc Golf Day 2022 signature discs, featuring Australian Indigenous artwork.

At this stage the second round should tee off at about 2.30pm, with play expected to wrap up around 4.45pm.
