The Millicent Bowls Club held its annual women’s handicap singles competition on Monday, where Joy Warren impressed to claim the 2022-23 title on the final shot of the grand final.

Play kicked off at 8.30 in cold and windy conditions, with all games contested over 21 ends.

Adriana Ross and Lyn Scudds met in the first semi-final, with the latter having to give up a four-shot start.

However, Scudds recovered the lead and at the seventh end scores were tied on eight shots each.

By the 17th end the scores remained locked at 17 shots, but by the 21st end Scudds was able to push out to a three-shot lead and book a place in the grand final.

The other semi-final had Warren play Heather Carthew.

After handicap adjustments, Carthew had to give her opponent a six-shot head start.

By the 11th end there was only a one-shot difference, with Warren ahead 19-18.

She held on well and after the 21st end Warren won the clash by five shots 29-24 to progress to the decider.

The grand final also was played over 21 ends, with Scudds giving Warren a 10-shot lead.

By the 12th end the handicap advantage had been reduced by two shots with the score sitting at 18-10.

Scudds continued to reel in the deficit and only three shots separated the finalists by the 17th end.

With only one end to play Warren held a four-shot lead and the result came down to the final bowl of the day.

Scudds held four shots as Warren stepped up to make her last bowl, which came down with a little weight and picked up the jack to end the game with four shots of her own.

The final score was 23 shots to 17, with Warren receiving the women’s singles handicap champion tile for 2022-23.
