Mixed results in Pennant for Mount Gambier

A BUSY week at the Mount Gambier Bowls Club began on Wednesday with both Midweek Pennant teams on the road for Round 6.

The Reds travelled down the Bay Road to take on Port MacDonnell Blue and returned home with the eight points after a 59-37 shot win.

The rink of Gary Williams, Jim Philpott, Kym Jones and Bryan Vorwerk led their opponents all day for a 33-16 win.

In the other rink, Maryka Heaver, Ray Hutchesson, Daryl Raneberg and Ian Von Stanke overcame their opposition to claim a 26-21 win.

The valuable eight points lifts the Reds into second spot on the ladder ahead of the Round 7 clash with Mount Gambier RSL Red.

The Blues travelled to Naracoorte and suffered a narrow one-shot loss.

Barb Milstead, Gary Widdison, Steve Smith and Ron Cox secured two points for the visitors with a 23-17 win but were unable to cover the other rink with the final result a 40-39 win to the home team.

The Blues returned home in third spot and will look ahead to the Round 7 clash with Port MacDonnell Blue to improve their position.

In Round 7 of the Friday Women’s Pennant, Mount Gambier was on the road to Lucindale and continued its excellent form this season with a 59-33 win.

Both rinks secured the eight points which lifted Mount Gambier into second spot on the ladder.

Gaylene Leggett, Mavis Edgecumbe, Maria Stabler and Beryl Versluis starred and enjoyed a good day on the green with a 39-14 win.

The Saturday Open Pennant saw the Division 1 Blue side host Naracoorte at the Bob Cranwell Centre where the visitors took home the points.

The final result was 61-47 as the visitors claimed the 12 points after close games on all rinks.

Gary Widdison, Jason Kuring, Gary McIntyre and Bryan Vorwerk were the best performers for Mount Gambier and suffered a narrow two-shot loss.

The Round 8 home clash with Penola looms as an important game for the Blues as they chase a finals spot.

The Division 1 Reds travelled to Robe and found the home team in good form.

The hosts mastered the conditions and their opponents to win two rinks for a 79-56 win.

Jim Philpott, Mick Ashby, John Reppin and Greg Carpenter secured two points for Mount Gambier with a 30-23 win.

The Reds held their second spot on the ladder and will look to rebound in the Round 8 clash with Port MacDonnell.

The Division 2 team also travelled to Robe where it had more success with wins in two rinks to secure 10 points with a 81-67 victory.

Jim Butchart, Kathryn Gray, Margaret Marshall and Mark McDonald led the way for Mount Gambier and secured an impressive 35-9 win.

The 10 points cemented a top-two spot with a Round 8 game against Naracoorte to look forward to.

The Division 3 South Reds played host to Beachport and despite wins in two rinks, suffered a narrow 70-67 loss.

Wins on the rinks skippered by Bob Cranwell and Jane Calleja gained the team four points.

The Blues in Division 3 South took on Port MacDonnell Blue and suffered a hard-fought defeat.

The rink skippered by Kale Calleja made Port MacDonnell work hard for its 14-13 win.

The Blues travelled home without any points but will now look to the Round 8 match up with Penola to improve its ladder position.
