THE Port MacDonnell Bowling Club held its men’s and women’s championship fours on the weekend.

The men’s event was sponsored by Herron Todd White and JM and ML Vaughan, with the annual honours taken out by Tim Wrightson, Wayne Dowdell, Keith Dowdell and Des Horrigan.

They defeated runners-up Danny Gaut, Lance Fisher, Justin Brown and Joe Pruis.

There were four teams which participated, with Gaut’s rink defeating Adam Wilson’s four to proceed to the final.

Scores were level after 12 ends, with an extra end required, where Gaut’s side scored one to advance to the decider.

Meanwhile, Wrightson’s team easily accounted for Kel Butlers’ rink to earn a place in the final.

In the final Gaut was away to a good start and won the first four ends, but after 10 ends Wrightson led 7-5.

Wrightson and crew then picked up 10 shots over the last five ends to claim the title 17-7 and be crowned back-to-back champions.

The women’s event was sponsored by She’s Apples and J Grosvenor.

In the end Heather Richards’ rink of Jan Dowdell, Sharon Perryman and Suzanne Connell secured the title honours.

With only three women’s teams Richards’ rink defeated Carol Schmidt’s team to advance to the final, which was played against Robyn Burley, Roma Henderson, Lyn Vanderley and Julie Beaman.

In an entertaining game Richards had a 7-2 lead after three ends, but by the fifth end Burley’s team closed the gap to two shots.

After 10 ends Richards led 10-9 and it remained anyone’s game.

By end 15 the margin was 15-14, which handed Richard’s side back-to-back titles by a narrow one shot.
