THE Mount Gambier Lakers men flexed their muscles on Saturday night to claim a hard-fought victory in Round 7 of the Country Basketball League.

The Lakers hosted the top-placed Ararat Redbacks at the Icehouse and in the end claimed a 75-62 victory.

Big personal scores were hard to come by for both sides, with Simon Berkefeld finishing with an equal game-high haul of 25 points for the Lakers.

Zac Dunmore also finished with 25 points for the Redbacks, while Jak Ryan (13) and Jordan Hollitt (10) also reached double figures for the home side.

Josh Fiegert was the only other Redback to reach double figures with 15 points.

From there the Lakers hosted a weary Surfcoast Chargers, who had faced a tough contest against Millicent the night before.

The Lakers showed no tardiness from their Saturday night game and jumped out to an early 21-11 lead at the first break.

They stretched that further in the second term, before hitting their straps in the final half to run away emphatic 119-50 victors.

Ben Young topped the scoresheets for the Lakers with 22 points, from Jak Ryan (19), Kane deWit (17), Shaun Lock (15) and Toby deWit (12).

The Lakers will now prepare for the enticing clash against Millicent Magic on Friday night, in what has become another top-of-the-table clash.
