FORMER club champion Phil Bliss was the winner in last Thursday’s stableford round at the Mount Gambier Golf Club.

Bliss managed just 17 points on the front nine before he kicked into gear on the home stretch.

His back nine of 36 off the stick, which was square of the card was enough to pick up 24 points.

Bliss’s impressive back nine included two birdies and two pars and saw him claim a one-point win.

Patrick O’Donnell continued his impressive run of form to post 40 points and claim second place.

He ended his round with a strong 73 off the stick with three birdies and continued to edge closer to a scratch handicap.

Peter Emetlis, Sullivan Moryn and Terry Janeway all tied on 37 points, while Richard Gosling, Mark Teakle and Graham greenwood all posted scores of 36 points.

The ball rundown extended to 34 points and Gordon Bignell claimed the final prize.

The nearest to pins went to Peter Waters on the eighth hole and Bliss on the 16th and both players managed to roll in their putts for birdies.

There were 113 players who took part in Saturday’s monthly medal and Peter Gardner and club captain Peter Waters both posted the rounds of the day with scores of nett 68.

Gardner took home the spoils as a countback was required to separate the two.

He claimed the C Grade honours by two strokes over Don Coulter on 70 and Stephen Stott, who was a further stroke back on 71.

In A Grade, it was Waters who won the $40 cheque from Roger Davis and Patrick O’Donnell, who both recorded nett scores of 69.

John Martin posted a strong round which included an eagle to take out fourth with a score of 70 off the stick.

In B Grade, John Maxwell and Darren Turner tied on nett 71 and it was Maxwell who rejoiced in the victory on a countback.

Turner was left to rue what could have been as a double-bogey on the final hole proved costly.

Jason Millhouse carded a nett score of 72 to claim third place.

The ball prizes were run down to nett scores of 76 and Sam Letizia claimed the last one.

The nearest to pins went to Balaklava Golf Club visitor Peter Friedrichs on the eighth hole and Nick Moretti on the 16th.
