Ryan claims maiden victory

A RELATIVE newcomer to competitive golf, Sue Ryan made her first visit to the winner’s circle at the Mount Gambier Golf Club on Wednesday.

Ryan finished square with the card in the third round of the Olympic Trophy event.

Her performance was good enough to claim the overall winner’s prize, one shot ahead of a trio of players on -1.

Jess Parsons took second place on a countback from Karen Forster, with Janina Morrison relegated to fourth.

Playing off a 42 handicap, Ryan finished the front nine at -1 and dropped shots on the fourth and sixth holes but picked one up on the par-four ninth.

She dropped two more shots on the 11th and 13th holes but got them back on the 12th and 15th before she sealed the win with an excellent par on the 18th.

Parsons started her round well but a sequence of four dropped shots from the sixth hole onwards ultimately cost her the chance of a victory.

Morrison’s score of -1 saw her head the ball rundown which went to -3, while Carol Davis took out the pro shot on the eighth hole.

The closest second shots to the par-five 17th hole went to Bernie Jennings for A Grade, Libby Altschwager in B Grade and Parsons in C Grade.

With many of the regular players still away on a golfing trip, a small field of 10 turned out in excellent conditions for Saturday’s stroke round .

The winner was Bernie Jennings with a quality net 72, five shots clear of runner-up Penne Saffin.

Playing off a 19 handicap, Jennings split her round 45/46 in a performance which was highlighted by a birdie on the par-five first hole and pars on the eighth, 10th and 18th.

She also took out the pro shot on the eighth hole, while Jan Shanahan’s tee shot earned her that prize on the 16th.
