Mixed results for Mount Gambier

MIDWEEK PENNANT

THE Pennant week for the Mount Gambier Bowls Club started on Wednesday at the Bob Cranwell Centre with Round 4 of Open Midweek Pennant, where the Red side hosted Port MacDonnell Red.

The visitors enjoyed the conditions under the roof and won both rinks to claim eight points with a 57-41 shot victory.

However, the rink of Ray Hutchesson, Daryl Raneberg, Maryka Heaver and Ian Von Stanke made the Keith Dowdell skippered rink work hard for their 25-23 win.

The Reds have now slipped to sixth place and will look to a Round 5 meeting with Naracoorte to bounce back.

Mount Gambier Blue slipped to third spot with the Round 4 bye and will host Port MacDonnell Red in Round 5.

FRIDAY PENNANT

On Friday the Mount Gambier Friday Pennant side returned to Naracoorte for a match against Naracoorte RSL.

The team continued its good start to the year with wins on both rinks.

Jane Calleja’s rink won 30-17, while Beryl Versluis claimed a 33-19 win to pave the way for a 27-shot overall victory to return home with eight points.

The win lifted the team to third on the ladder and it now looks forward to the visit of Beachport Blue in Round 6.

OPEN PENNANT

Mount Gambier’s Division 1 Red side travelled to face cross-town rival Mount Gambier RSL Red on Saturday, where they found the hosts in impressive form.

The reigning premiers won two of the three rinks to take out the game 93 shots to 61.

The best performed Mount Gambier rink was Jim Philpott, Kristy Errock, Daniel Langdon and Brad Errock, who all bowled well to beat the Neil Tobin skippered rink 23-18 and secure two points.

The disappointing loss leaves the Reds in fourth spot and they will now host Kingston in Round 6.

The Division 1 Blue side travelled to Kingston and found the hosts in good form.

The rink of Gary Widdison, Jason Kuring, Kym Jones and Bryan Vorwerk secured the only points of the day with a 22-19 win.

The 66-55 loss saw the Blues drop to seventh, with a Round 6 meeting with Millicent on the cards.

A Division 2 thriller saw Mount Gambier defeated Naracoorte RSL 69-68 at home.

The rink of Dougie McPhail, Diana Harris, Perria Davis and Eddy Smith enjoyed a 23-18, while Barb Milstead, John Hughes, Gary McIntyre and Ron Cox won a close encounter 22-20.

The valuable 10 points puts the team in sixth place, but only five points off top spot in an even Division 2 competition.

The Divison 3 South Red team travelled to Millicent to take on the local Reds in Round 5.

Despite winning two rinks, Mount Gambier suffered a 74-62 loss.

The rink of Beryl Versluis, Ron James, Rex Klaassens and Ray Hutchesson mastered the conditions to register a 26-13 shot win.

Meanwhile, Nicola Bowditch, Kathryn Gray, Glenn Brown and Jane Calleja won a tight game 23-21.

The four points has the Reds in fifth spot heading into a Round 6 clash with Port MacDonnell Red.

The Division 3 South Blue side played host to Mount Gambier RSL Red and found the visitors a hard nut to crack.

With wins on the three rinks the visitors returned home with a 82-51 shot win.

The Mount Gambier rink of Gary Williams, Ron Kuhl, Athol Malseed and David Holland had the closest result with a 20-26 shot loss.

They will look to improve when they match up against Millicent Red next round.
