MIDWEEK PENNANT

A BUSY week for the Mount Gambier Bowls Club started on Wednesday with Round 3 of the Open Midweek competition.

The Blue side travelled to Millicent to take on Millicent Red for what would be an overall draw.

An exciting game was played with two close rinks.

Mount Gambier’s Barb Milstead, Gary Widdison, James Farran and Ron Cox were able to defeat the Millicent rink skippered by Arthur O’Donnell with a 22-19 result.

The final rink saw a 24-21 win to Millicent, which tied up the match and saw the teams share the points.

Mount Gambier travelled home with four points which was enough to take it to top of the premiership table after Round 3, but a bye in Round 4 will likely drop them a place or two.

The Mount Gambier Red team had a bye and will look to regain top spot when its takes on Port MacDonnell Red at home this week.

FRIDAY PENNANT

Round 4 of the Friday Pennant competition saw Mount Gambier hit the road for a meeting with Naracoorte.

Despite the wet conditions, the guests were able to return home with six points.

The stars of the day were the rink of Barb Butchart, Maria Stabler, Margaret Marshall and Jane Calleja who had a good day on the green to win 26-15.

This result was enough to secure a 50-44 shot victory and fourth spot on the ladder.

They return to Naracoorte in Round 5 to take on Naracoorte RSL.

OPEN PENNANT

Saturday’s Open Pennant competition had Mount Gambier Red travel to Penola for Round 4.

The game started in wet and windy conditions as the Reds started off well to hold a slender lead at the break.

At the end of the day the guests were able to claim the overall honours, with two rink wins earning them a 69-51 shot victory.

The Greg Carpenter skippered rink dominated their opposition to win 16 ends for a comfortable 31-16 victory.

The victory saw the Reds climb into the top four and they now look forward to a Round 5 matchup against cross-town rival Mount Gambier RSL Red.

Mount Gambier Blue played at home and hosted Mount Gambier RSL Blue on Saturday.

The home team won two of the three rinks to secure 10 points with an impressive 74-57 shot win.

The best Mount Gambier rink was Maryka Heaver, Daryl Raneberg, Gary Hocking and Ian Von Stanke, who shut out the opposing rink skippered by Ron Ploenges with a dominant 35-22 result.

The 10 points took the Blues into fifth spot and they will now travel to Kingston in Round 5.

Mount Gambier’s Division 2 team travelled to Millicent to take on the home Red side.

The going was tough in windy conditions and the locals proved too strong and won all three rinks for an overall 80-63 victory.

Mark McDonald and Eddy Smith’s rinks both made their oppositions work hard to go down by a slim three shots.

Mount Gambier will now look to bounce back against Naracoorte RSL at home this weekend.

In Division 3 South, Mount Gambier Red lost to Mount Gambier RSL Blue

Red’s rinks skippered by Ray Hutchesson and Jane Calleja battled hard all day to go down by the slimmest one-shot margins.

The loss leaves Mount Gambier Red in fifth place, with a roadtrip to Millicent this weekend.

Mount Gambier Blue’s Division 3 South side visited Millicent and despite two rink wins, suffered a 76-70 shot loss.

David Holland and Kale Calleja’s rinks both had good wins to secure four valuable points, which leaves the Blues in ninth place heading into a home game against Mount Gambier RSL Red this week.
