A NEW president was appointed for the Mount Gambier Golf Club women last week at the club’s AGM.

Kathy Ewer was elected president and Jan Shanahan continued in her role as captain for her final tenure.

The members present at the AGM were notified of the women’s restrooms which had been completed at a cost of $25,853,of which a Government grant of $11,400 was received and the members contributed $14,200 to complete the works.

Major trophy winners were presented and Shanahan was awarded the prestigious Duffield Pin, while Lizzie Clements received the Medal of Medals trophy.

Both trophies were presented by life member, Isobel Phillips.

A large field of 47 then competed in the Peter Dempsey sponsored stableford event.

The day was perfect for golf, the greens fast and the course set-up long.

However, six women played under their handicaps, which created several count-backs for first position.

Four players finished on 37 points and the winner was Shanahan (19 handicap), with a split of 17/20 points.

Shanahan played the long back nine well with 20 points, but what won the day was a birdie on the par 4 18th hole resulting in four points.

In second place was Carol Davis (17 handicap), who played a consistent game, with her split for the two nines 19/18 points.

Andrea Pegler (19 handicap) claimed third place, also on 37 points.

Peglar recorded five pars in her round, but had a wipe-out on the difficult 13th hole which cost her the win.

Janina Morrision (21 handicap) completed the 37 points count-back but did not feature in the final placings.

She did however have a birdie on the par 4 fifth hole.

Due to the large field, 12 balls were given out to players who had in the range of 37-32 points.

The pro shot on the par 3 eighth hole for three balls went to Susan Ryan.

The speciality prizes of a ball each for the best score on the back nine went to A Grade’s Diann Norman, B Grade’s Kathy Ewer and C Grade’s Ryan.

On Wednesday November 2 the play of the day will be the third round of the Olympic Trophy.

Meanwhile, 14 women teed off on Saturday in a stableford competition in perfect conditions.

Morrison continued her winning way by once again having a strong 39 points, playing three below her handicap of 20.

Morrison claimed the win by three shots and her split showed 20/19 points, as she registered seven three-pointers.

A count-back for second place was required, with Clements claiming the honour after having four points on the final hole.

She carded 33 points with a split of 17/16 points.

Bernie Jennings rounded out the podium after the count-back with Clements.

Jennings played to her handicap on the front nine with 18 points and amassed 15 on the back nine after just one point on the 18th hole.
