THE Mount Gambier District Little Athletics season is upon us, with the first meeting to be held tonight.

The season is shaping up nicely with a full calendar of events, which will run through to the State Cross Country Championships in July next year.

On Sunday the committee opened the sheds and welcomed a large number of families to collect membership bags and uniforms in preparation for the opening night.

Adrian Lynch has stepped back into the president’s role this year while Mick Ellis travels overseas.

Lynch was pleased to see the initial online registrations already over the 100 mark.

“To have 113 already signed up bodes well, considering we still expect a further 50 to join before Christmas,” he said.

“Last year we catered for 156 eager participants.”

That number certainly seems achievable again for the 2022 season, which coincides with the 50-year anniversary of Little Athletics in South Australia (SALAA).

First formed in 1972, SALAA is affiliated with Little Athletics Australia and continues to go from strength to strength, especially on the back of the Commonwealth Games success of Jess Stenson – a Limestone Coast native and proud Little Athletics alumna.

The committee has met regularly in the lead up to the season, with all on track for a successful year.

The “Tiny Tots” Under 5 athletes will kick off tonight’s meeting at Mount Gambier High School at 4.15pm, with the older age groups – Under 6 and Under 17 – encouraged to arrive from 4.30pm onwards.

A warm-up is scheduled for 4.45pm with the meeting to start as close to 5pm as possible.

Upon arrival at Mount Gambier High School, attendees are advised to find a committee member to point them in the right direction.
