SUNDAY SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP

THE Mount Gambier Golf Club’s Seniors Championship was held on Sunday, which was open to all members over the age of 50.

Other than the Club Championship it is the most sought after win of the year with the victors walking visibly taller for the next 12 months.

In the men’s Open division Patrick O’Donnell claimed victory with a fine 77 off-the-stick.

Joe Clements snuck his way into second on a countback from Roger Davis, with both players carding 78’s.

In the age brackets nett scores were used.

The 50-59 age category was won by Grant Harvey on 69 from Dave McGregor on 70.

Roger Davis won the 60-69 age group, also with a 69, while Russel Lewis finished runner-up on 72.

The 70-plus division was taken out by Tony McGregor with a solid nett 66 from Lofty Anderson with 69.

The best stableford score of the day went to Craig Wirth with 79 off-the-stick and 38 points.

Wirth finished bogey, bogey, double bogey, which left him ruing what might have been.

For the Women’s Open division Leanne Hunt claimed victory with 91 off-the-stick, followed by Faye Mainwaring on 94.

The Women’s 50-69 class saw Bernie Jennings claim the win on a countback from Vicki Clark, after both players posted 76.

The 70-plus women’s category had Lois Harvey on top of the podium as she enjoyed another countback win from Yvonne Shirley, both on 80.

THURSDAY STABLEFORD

The afternoon players enjoyed the best of the weather last Thursday after a rainy morning session for the Mount Gambier Golf Club’s stableford round.

Michael Foran was the clear winner with an impressive 44 points, while Russel Lewis secured second on 40.

Foran had a front nine of 23 points, highlighted by a birdie two for four points on the par 3 sixth hole and then came home with 21 points to never be threatened for the win.

Lewis had an average front nine of 17 points but a 36 off-the-stick on the back, which included a birdie on the last, collected the 23 points needed to finish runner-up.

Matty Knowles and Jacob Reed posted 39 points apiece, while Patrick Dempsey, Nic Clayton, John Gee and Max Tollner all carded 38 points.

The ball rundown extended to 36 points with Bryce Cutting claiming the last one.

Nearest the pins were claimed by Jovan Taiki on the eighth, who visited from the Ilfracombe Golf Club in Queensland, along with Jeff Hodge on the 16th.

SATURDAY PAR ROUND

Saturday’s par round at the Mount Gambier Golf Club saw Peter Lock card the best score of the day.

He finished five-up to claim the A Grade and overall honours, with a tidy one-up on the front nine before he came home with four-up on the back.

Phil McBain finished runner-up on two-up.

After standing on the 13th tee three-down he played the last six holes four under the card to edge out an unlucky Craig Wirth on the countback for second.

In B Grade David McPherson had four-up to finish two strokes ahead of Grant Harvey on two-up.

Archie Milich claimed the C Grade honours with three-up, while Jack Peacock followed closesly with two-up.

The ball rundown extended to two-down, which allowed even former president Tim Driver to claim a ball for the first time in quite a few months.

Richard Gosling claimed the nearest the pin on the eighth, while an in-form Nic Clayton did the same on the 16th.

Only the latter was able to convert for a birdie two.
