A LARGE field of 38 women attended the Mount Gambier Golf Club last Wednesday to compete in the first round of the Olympic Trophy stableford, sponsored by Limestone Holdings.

The Olympic Trophy competition is played over three rounds, consisting of one stableford, one stroke and a par round.

The player with the combined best score is then declared the winner.

Fine, drizzly rain persisted on the day, but that did not deter some players excelling.

The score of the day, and continuing her “purple patch” came from Janina Morrison with 41 points, including six three-pointers, with an excellent 44 off the stick on the long back nine.

It was Morrison’s best score, with a total of 90 off the stick and once again the handicapper will play her hand.

Runner-up honours in Division 1 went to Heather Barry, who played one under her handicap to record 37 points.

Her split was a consistent 19/18 points, with no wipe-outs registered.

In Division 2 a determined Jane Lamont had a great score of 38 points.

She also did not record a wipe-out on her card and her split for the day was 20/18 points.

Lamont’s highlight came on the par 3 eighth hole with a birdie for five points.

In the ball run-down balls were won by nine players ranging from 36 points to 33.

In the speciality prizes the pro shot on the par 3 eighth hole went to Kate McCormick.

Best front nine winners were A Grade’s Jan Shanahan, B Grade’s Kate McCormick and C Grade’s Jill Johnson.

On October 26 the format of the day will be a stroke round for the second round of the Olympic Trophy.

Last Saturday the unforgiving par round was the competition of the day and only 10 women competed in fine but windy conditions.

The win went to relative new golfer Jill Johnson (handicap 35) who won on a three-way count-back with 2-down.

Johnson enjoyed a consistent game, with a split of 1-down/1-down.

After the count-back, runner-up went to Leanne Hunt (handicap 17) who had a nice

front nine with 2-up, but succumbed to the difficult back nine with 4-down.

The third golfer to lose in the count-back was Jessica Parson (handicap 28) who also carded 2-down.

She also fell prey to the back nine, her split being 2-up/4-down.
