A RECORD number of participants took part in Tuesday’s social bowls competition held at the Mount Gambier Bowls Club.

An unprecedented 42 bowlers participated in the latest round of social bowls.

The Mount Gambier Bowls Club has previously had about 30 competitors take part each week but the pleasant weather brought out visitors from across the Limestone Coast.

Bowlers from the Mount Gambier RSL, Port MacDonnell, Dartmoor and Robe Bowling Clubs took part.

Athol Malseed has been in charge of social bowls at the club for 15 years and was pleased with the numbers on the day.

“In the past we couldn’t bowl at this time of year because it was too cold and wet,” Malseed said.

He said the new shed has helped drive numbers up in the last 12 months.

In the past there would only be around 10 competitors each week but the new facility, which is considered one of the best in the region, has meant bowlers are able to hit the greens each week in higher numbers than before.

Among the 42 bowlers on the day was Mavis Edgcumbe, who has enjoyed bowls for 40 years.

“It doesn’t matter whether you are old or young, it is a good game,” Edgcumbe said.
