Apollo 3 d Gambier Centrals 2

APOLLO claimed an exciting victory over Gambier Centrals in Round 3 of the Senior Women’s Limestone Coast Football Association.

Apollo made use of their wind advantage in the first half as goals from Nop Pho Rad and Arabella Calderwood gave them a two-goal lead at halftime.

“I thought we dominated for the majority of the game,” Apollo coach Jamie Stephenson said.

Centrals fought back early in the second half as they had the wind in its favour.

Isla Dickson and Rayian Smith scored two quick goals to level the game, with half an hour to play.

However, Apollo remained unfazed and halted any progression from the Lions.

“Centrals really hit us hard, they scored two quick goals and utilised the wind, but our girls just stuck together,” Stephenson said.

“As soon as they scored the second goal, it kicked us back into gear to go back to our style of play.

“In the past we probably would have allowed Centrals to come back and get the win, but we went back to the way we were playing in the first half and put the game to bed”

Apollo was rewarded for their efforts as Paris Ackland scored a goal against the wind to give her side the lead again.

The goal was enough to give Apollo its second win of the season in what has been strong start to its campaign.

“Last year we finished second-last and we’d won just the two games all year, so we’re trying to put in a style of play that we want from the girls,” Stephenson said.

“We’ve got a really nice unit now, so to have such a big win like we did last week against Naracoorte was something we’re not used to.

“With the team that we’ve got, I don’t think there’s any teams that we fear.

“If we play to the standard we’ve set ourselves, I think we can beat any team.”

International 8 d Millicent United 0

International continued its strong start to the season when it defeated Millicent on Sunday.

It was a goal-fest as four players scored braces in a game that Inter dominated throughout.

It was a strong performance from captain April Hockey as she scored two goals.

Ella Doody, Florencia Llambi and Leonie Robertson found the back of the net twice as well.

The game continued Inter’s perfect start to the season as it claimed a third win in as many games and sit three points clear of second on the ladder.

Blue Lake’s clash with Naracoorte was rescheduled as the latter was unable to field a side due to Covid.
