Top scores in ideal conditions

ON a perfect day for golf, 40 women participated in the the first round of the Mount Gambier Golf Club’s A, B and C Grade championship qualifying rounds, with D Grade playing a stableford competition.

The best nett score of the day and the winner was newcomer Rosalie Hunt.

Off her handicap of 30, Hunt carded splits of 47/48 for a total of 95 and a nett 65.

Hunt played eight shots under her handicap in an impressive display of golf.

Palying off 24, Janina Morrison claimed the second-best nett score of the day, registering a total of 91/24/67, six shots under her handicap, with five pars along the way.

Chris Galpin (25) claimed third place on a count-back from Vicki Clark.

Galpin also played under her handicap with a total of 96-24-71 and splits of 47/49.

Eight balls were given out in the ball run-down and went from nett 71 to nett 76.

Clark earned herself three balls for the nearest to pin on the eighth hole, while second-shots balls went to A Grade’s Jennifer VanRijthoven, B Grade’s Kate McCormick and C Grade’s Mary Kentish.

In the stableford competition, Liz Clements was an easy winner, with 40 points from her handicap of 43.

Leading after the first round of qualifying is Kerry Pedlar with 82 off the stick, followed by Jan Shanahan (90) and Faye Mainwaring (91), with five others close behind.

While Morrison claimed Division 2, she could qualify in Division 1 with her score of 91 off the stick, closely followed by Jeannette Braun with 94 off the stick.

Division 3 disappointingly only had six players qualifying, with Hunt’s 95 off the stick the best, followed by Clark’s 98.

Meanwhile, 16 women played the difficult game of par last Saturday, again in great golfing weather.

Helen Gregory returned a solid 2-up to claim the honours, after being 1-up on both nines.

Gregory’s score included six wipe-outs but she countered that with eight wins.

Jan Shanahan continued her good form to claim second place with 1-up, after being square on the front nine and 1-up on the difficult back nine.

Third place went to Kathy Ewer with a score of square.
