Shotgun start beats heat

WOMEN BEAT THE HEAT: Division 2 runner-up Lucy Richards, winner Jaynee Oberer, Division 1 winner Helen Myers, runner-up Trudy Herbert, and third-place Dianne Perryman. Picture submitted.

A CHANGE of format was required for the women at the Blue Lake Golf Club last week, as the forecast temperature was above the heat policy.

As a result a shotgun start at 7.30am was organised for the third round of the Sorrentos Café

Summer Trophy and the first round of the Metro Bakery and Cafe Silver Salver.

Once again it was the “dreaded” par competition but that did not deter the 30-plus women competing for points in both events.

In-form winner from the previous par round when she had +5, Helen Myers, proved it was not a one-off, claiming the score of the day again with a +4.

That gave her the three points on offer for the Summer Trophy for the second week in a row, providing a great advantage with only one round to play.

Playing off a 19 handicap, Myers had one par on the front nine, combined with eight halved holes to turn at +1.

She added pars on the 11th, 12th, 13th and 15th holes, then a couple of scrubs, before finishing at +4 to take the top voucher.

Trudy Herbert, playing off 27, also had a consistent front nine, turning with +1.

She parred the 14th and 15th holes but unfortunately the three scrubs she incurred on the back nine relegated her to second place at +1.

Dianne Perryman (18) and Josie Ashby (20) both signed for -1, with a count-back giving Perryman the nod.

Another in a purple patch is Division 2’s Jaynee Oberer, who took the top voucher and has dropped her handicap on a week-to-week basis.

Playing off 33, her card included pars on the fifth, 13th and 16th holes, plus four scrubs to finish with a credible +3.

She was able to shake off Lucy Richards, who signed for +2 from her 35 handicap.

Richards card included seven plusses but was hindered by four scrubs.

Rounding out the podium was relative new-comer Kate Hommelhoff, often seen on the course practicing.

Her hard work is paying off as her handicap drops almost each outing.

Hommelhoff signed square to her handicap of 32.

Nearest to the pin second shot on the par 3 16th hole went to Division 1’s Sue Agars and Division 2’s Oberer.

Novelty winners for a birdie were Ronda Edwards on the second hole and Helen Stratford on the 15th.

Ferrets went to Myers on the sixth hole, with a ferret/birdie to Geraldine Scott on the fifth and Rosemary Martland on the 15th.
