Women not deterred by the weather

BLUE LAKE GOLF CLUB PLACINGS: Division 1 third place Geraldine Scott, second Lee-Anne Medhurst, winner Josie Ashby, Division 2 winner Carol Melhuish, second place Carol Megaw, third Bev Pascoe.

GREY skies did not deter 24 women at the Blue Lake Golf Club playing a stableford competition last week.

The top score of the day came from Division 2’s Carol Melhuish who has found her purple patch the last couple of outings.

Division 1 winner Josie Ashby is also having a good run and will be one to watch in the upcoming annual Wayne Scutter invitational event in the women’s section.

Ashby signed for 36 points, playing to her handicap of 21.

With no wiped holes on her card her gross score of 48/44 included pars on the first, ninth and 11th and 15th holes, finishing with splits of 17/19.

Not far behind was Lee-Anne Medhurst, another regular on the podium, taking second place after a count-back from vice captain Geraldine Scott.

Medhurst’s 35 points off a 26 handicap had the better back-nine score of 17 to Scott’s 15.

Medhurst had a wipe on the challenging eighth hole and only one par on the 13th to score a handy four points.

Playing off a 22 handicap, Scott had no wipes and a good score of 20 points on the front nine that included a par on the second.

But a disappointing back nine saw her settle for third spot.

Winning Division 2, Melhuish’s score of 38 points made good use of the extra strokes allowed on the harder indexed holes from her 39 handicap, with seven three-pointers and a four-pointer, plus a wipe on the 10th.

Splits of 18/20 were worthy of taking first place.

Runner-up Carol Megaw could be forgiven for thinking she had the win in her pocket signing for 37 points off a handicap of 30, as she scored on every hole, with four three-pointers, a four-pointer and pars on the third and 15th.

Bev Pascoe rounded out the podium and also scored on every hole which included a birdie on the dogleg 15th resulting in a four-pointer to finish with 35 points.

Annette Ford and Vivienne Wilson won their respective grades nearest to pin second shot on the par 3 14th hole.

The pro shot was won by Lucy Richards on the downhill par 3 fifth hole and she also collected a chocolate bar for a ferrett on the ninth.

With the 2021 calendar of major trophy competitions completed, awards will be announced at the presentation night.
