THE cards fell as expected in round 10 of Western Border football, but that did not mean there was no excitement on Saturday.

Goals were in high demand as the top three teams in the competition faced the bottom three and every victorious side had their spearhead forward on the day, which provided several possible candidates for the K&S Fuels Player of the Week award.

For North Gambier it was the eight-goal haul from Matt McInerney which helped the Tigers on their way to a 42-point triumph over Casterton Sandford at Island Park.

Turn your eyes back to the Blue Lake city and West Gambier’s Ben Papps was a deadly target up forward to finish his day with six majors in the Roos’ crushing 96-point defeat over Millicent.
Youngster Jett Attard also popped up in front of the big sticks with four goals.
Over at McDonald Park the going was a little tougher, but East Gambier was able to get the job done over South Gambier by a comfortable 40 points.

Matt Scanlon was the main culprit in the forward line with four goals for the Bulldogs, while Kevin Thomson banged through three to raise himself to second in the league goal kicking with a total of 24 for the season.

That list is still topped by Tigers’ coach Justin McConnell, even after missing two games to injury, which included Saturday’s bout against Casterton Sandford.

However, his position was easily filled by McInerney, who had a field day in front of the big sticks to bring his season total to 19 from only four games.
For that reason McInerney receives the round 10 K&S Fuels Player of the Week honours.
