THIS 1958 Cambridge and Royal Blue FC Holden does not fall far from the classical 1957 Chevrolet, donning a similar shape and style.

Memories of cruising the Yorke Peninsula streets in an FC during his younger years spurred owner Bob Mitchell to purchase the vehicle in 1998.

Mr Mitchell started a “stripped down” restoration of the vehicle just two years ago.

“I paid $200 for it in 1998 so it has definitely gone up in value over the years,” Mr Mitchell said.

“All of the work on the vehicle has been completed locally with the shell being bead blasted and primed in Portland, upholstery finished by SewUnique in Mount Gambier, painted in Casterton and the mechanics polished off by myself.

“I do not have a favourite aspect of the vehicle but I know a lot of time and effort went into fixing up the 131 cubic inch, six-cylinder Grey Holden motor.”

The Casterton resident said the vehicle has stayed in the Green Triangle region since its restoration, travelling to Hamilton, Mount Gambier and Penola from his hometown.

“I wanted to keep it in the area so I knew there was nothing wrong with it if I was to go on a bigger trip,” Mr Mitchell said.

“I have all the papers and books which show the first people to own the car in 1959 paid nine pounds to register it for 12 months.

“The first owners purchased it through finance for two yearly payments when their wool cheque came in.”

Mr Mitchell said he cherished the known history of the vehicle and believes it adds value.

“We have been working on the car for the last two years and it is going through its last touches now,” he said.

“A lot of people look at the car when I drive past because I think they have not seen a car like this for a long time.

“Now I am retired I am looking at spending more time of the road with the car.”

Mr Mitchell said he shared a passion for automotive in general, picking up a hobby in tractor restoration.

“I am a member of the Holdens of Age Car Club and have only been apart since the last six months,” he said.

“They were over in Casterton one weekend and I just thought it would help me source different parts for the vehicle.

“I am also a member of another Casterton car club and both groups have allowed me to make new friends and I have enjoyed every bit of it.”
