SPORTING SUCCESS: Mount Gambier High School sporting captains Reid Kuller and Imogen Walker accept the sporting cup on behalf of their school after it was victorious in the 2019 Glossop exchange last week.

MOUNT Gambier High School hosted the 72nd annual Glossop Exchange last week.

The yearly exchange, which pits the Mount Gambier and Glossop High Schools against each other in a range of sports and debating contest saw fierce competition over the two-and-a-half days.

Glossop High School travelled to the South East on the Monday and brought 62 students and six staff members for the event.

This year Mount Gambier High claimed the sporting cup and Glossop won the debating shield.

The exchange saw a range of sports contested, including soccer, netball, basketball, hockey and football, while both mixed hockey and girl’s football were introduced into the program for the first time.

Across all matches, the competition between the schools was tight.

MGHS was successful in the girls’ and boys’ soccer, Division B netball, boys’ basketball and both girls’ and boys’ football matches, while Glossop won the Division A netball, mixed hockey and girls’ basketball.

Following the events referees selected the most valuable players for each sport.

Both schools were proud of how their students interacted with one another both on and off the sporting fields.

The second half of the exchange saw the debate held, with the topic of the debate “Modern society produces resilient people”.

MGHS was the affirmative team, while Glossop claimed the win arguing against the topic.

The exchange was once again deemed a success and Mount Gambier High School sports coordinator Kerran Wingard was pleased with the sportsmanship shown throughout the competition.

“It was fantastic to see students from both schools give their all in each of the sports and the debate and then come together and shake hands,” he said.

“The level of competition throughout the week was a testament to both schools and their students.”

He also gave thanks to the sporting associations which allowed their facilities to be utilised for the exchange.

“We are very fortunate to have some wonderful local sporting associations who allowed us to use their facilities to host matches, while the return of competitive football to the Mount Gambier High School grounds was incredible.

“A very high number of students came out to watch the soccer and football matches which were held at Mount Gambier High School and large crowds attended the netball and basketball matches held at the Icehouse.”

Mount Gambier High School now looks forward to travelling north to Glossop in 2020, in the effort to retain the sporting cup and win back the debating shield.
