THE South East Women’s Football Association held its annual Pink Ribbon Cup at Blue Lake Sports Park on Saturday, with a change of format to previous years.
Instead of the usual minor round draw and finals, Saturday’s event was held as a one-day carnival for both Under 16’s and seniors.
In the senior competition 15-minute halves were played with a five-minute break.
Millicent and United both progressed through the minor-round games undefeated, booking a meeting in the decider, which saw Millicent take out the pre-season honours after a 2-0 win.
On its way to the victory, Millicent defeated Centrals 2-0 and Apollo City 2-1, while it drew with both United and Inter.
The points system saw an extra point awarded to the team which scored first, with three for a win and one for a draw.
As a result, Millicent and United sat on nine points each at the end of the carnival, with United defeating Inter 1-0, while drawing with Apollo, Millicent and Centrals.
The final was a close affair and intensity was high, but Claire Davey and Lily Izzo both finished off well to see the scoreline 2-0 in Millicent’s favour at the end of the match.
In the Under 16 tournament – played in 10-minute halves – Gambier Centrals took out the day, as it claimed a 2-0 win over Apollo.
The Lions finished with a perfect 16 points heading into the final, with four wins and no goals conceded.
Apollo also did well to win three of its matches, but fell to Centrals 1-0 in their minor-round clash.
The final again saw Centrals on the front foot and it powered home to start the season on a high note.
Both games were played in good spirit and the association now looks forward to the start of the home-and-away season on Saturday, May 11.
