DIVISION 1/2 WOMEN – TIGERS (D1) 7  d REDBACKS (D2) 1

A NEW-look Division 1 women Tigers team started its Lower South East hockey campaign on Saturday night against Redbacks’ Division 2 side.

Tigers started well to score within the first 10 minutes and had the bulk of play in its attacking half, but Redbacks’ defence minimised the damage.

However, the shackles were broken by striker Brooke Marcus, who had a standout game to score three goals, aided by fellow striker Dana Jones with two.

Redbacks managed to win a short corner and convert it thanks to an Angela Kain hit, but that was the team’s only shot on goal, in what resulted in a 7-1 win to Tigers.

Strengthened by the return of Olivia Turner, who also scored a goal, the Tigers midfield linked up well and showed why it is a Division 1 side.

Kaitlyn Nisbet rounded out the scoring with a bullet short corner hit which Redbacks’ keeper Neave Delaney had no chance of reaching, despite a solid game from the young goalie.

REDBACKS 5 (D1)d TIGERS (D2) 0

TIGERS’ Division 2 women’s side did not fare as well as its Division 1 counterpart, as Redbacks’ Division 1 team proved too strong in their opening round clash.

Redbacks started the game quickly into attack, pressuring the Tigers’ defence from the get go.

The first quarter was played mainly in Tigers’ defensive end, with Anna Mitchell scoring a sweet back-stick goal to open Redback’s account.

Tigers prevented another goal before the end of the first half, with some good saves from keeper Hope Hinton, but Redbacks opened the game up after the long break.

A lapse from Tigers saw Redbacks score three goals through Lauren Manser, Jemma Heraper and Claudia Edmonds in the third quarter.

Tigers lifted again in the last, but Redbacks tacked on a final goal to end the game 5-0 victors.

DIVISION 3 WOMEN – CAVALIERS 2 d TIGERS 0

IN Division 3, the Cavaliers women claimed a two-goal win over Tigers in a tight encounter.

Cavaliers broke through with an early goal, but then Tigers settled and had the majority of play.

However, the team was unable to convert, while Cavaliers had some strong runs forward and managed to score midway through the final quarter.

Tigers fought hard, but could not find the finishing touch on some good attacking moves.

UNDER 15 GIRLS – TIGERS 5 d WEST 1

THE Under 15 girls competition saw a four-goal win over West, in a close match which was not reflected on the scoreboard.

Tigers jumped out of the blocks early with a goal to Lauren Montgomery within the first five minutes, which was followed up by a goal from Briony Pettingil for a 2-0 lead.

However, West’s Tess Kenseley pulled one back and it looked top be anyone’s game.

After the half-time break Tigers put its foot down and second-half goals to Abbey Hood and two more from Montgomery – to complete the hat trick – sealed a 5-1 win.
