THE final round of Mount Gambier and District tennis before the Christmas break was met by wet conditions as Saturday’s games unfolded, but that did not deter teams as they took to the court for the last time in 2018.

Despite just one Division 1 game yielding a result on Friday night, there was only one match called off on Saturday.

In the mixed doubles competition all games were played, with some big wins on the day.

The closest clash was between Mount Gambier White and its Blue team clubmates, as the latter won the round by just four games.

For ladder-leader Reidy Park a dominant 6-0 set win over Mount Schank was the result, while second-placed Mount Gambier Green managed a 5-1 victory over third-placed Glencoe.

The final match of the round saw Gambier Centrals claim its second win of the season, when it accounted for Mil Lel five sets to one.

The difference between second and third on the ladder was shown when Mount Gambier Green hosted Glencoe for a solid Round 10 win.

Just one set went the way of the guests, which saw Tricia Guerin and Alison Meyer with a 6-2 win over Renae Cameron and Cathy Egan.

The remaining five sets went Mount Gambier’s way, all with convincing margins apart from two 6-4 results.

The first of those games saw Michael Cameron and Egan defeat Peter Barry and Meyer, while Jamie Clarke and Renae Cameron had the same result over Mark Flavel and Guerin.

In the closest game of the round, Mount Gambier’s White and Blue teams fought it out in a tight battle.

Although the final score saw the Blue team with the win by just four games, with three sets each, the game scores were not that close.

The tightest match saw White’s Daryl Ferguson and Jason Seidel with a 7-5 win over Blue’s Andrew Le Cornu and Jim Lopriore.

The remaining sets saw two 6-2 results, a 6-1 and a 6-0, with the final total giving the Blue team the honours and keeping it in fourth place in the standings.

It was a white wash win for current ladder leader Reidy Park when it hosted Mount Schank, giving up just four games on the day.

A 6-2 win for Cade and Maddison Kelly over Will Boston and Abbey Hood was the closest match, with the remaining sets coming easily with 6-1 and 6-0 results.

The final game saw somewhat of an upset win for Centrals over Mil Lel, as the latter currently sits in fifth place with four wins for the season.

Going into the match Centrals had won just one game from nine rounds, but it doubled that on Saturday to carry a confidence boost into the new year.

The only set to go Mil Lel’s way was won by Brian Douglas and Bronwyn McKinnon 7-5, while the remaining matches went to the guests.

Tennis will now take a break over the Christmas and new year period and is set to resume with the Division 1 men and women on Friday, January 11, followed by the other Divisions on Saturday, January 12.
