Freeman wins Allan Pendrey Memorial

MEMORIAL HONOURS: Blue Lake Archers president Ian Harris presents the Allan Pendrey Memorial Shield to 2018 winner Paul Freeman.

THE annual Blue Lake Archers Allan Pendrey Memorial outdoor event was run over the weekend, with Paul Freeman taking out the 2018 title.

It had been postponed from its normal position in the club’s schedule due to a clash with other national and state events, but was a fitting delay, as it resulted in the event coinciding with Remembrance Day.

The weekend began with the bi-weekly indoor event, scheduled as a double dose of 25-metre Australian indoor rounds, which saw Ben Kilsby in fine form.

The opening round looked good for Kilsby with a maximum 10 point scores from his first 14 arrows of the 30 to be shot.

In the latter part of the round, four arrows landed slightly wide in the nine point zone and Kilsby finished with 296 from a possible 300 points off the bow.

Once adjusted scores were sorted Kilsby had won the round, while second place was almost forced to a countback with Graham Lock and Garry Jacques separated by a single point which went Lock’s way.

The second round was visited by equipment gremlins – both Kilsby and Lock running into issues – and Kilsby was forced to retire, while Lock was able to continue.

A huge turn around was noted for Ian Harris who had struggled to find a sight setting at the start of the night and was the lowest scorer in round one.

With the sight sorted, Harris set about rounding up his colleagues to advance toward the front of the adjusted scores.

The round finished with him achieving a zero to hero effort to claim the win, while Paul Freeman also slid up the order to finish second.

Sunday the conditions were near perfect for the fourth running of the Allan Pendrey Memorial, a 120-arrow Adelaide round over 60, 50, 40 and 30 metres.

It is the first of the bigger events the club runs after the return of daylight saving.

Kilsby was still settling his bow after repairs from Friday night, but succeeded in having the best off-the-bow scores throughout each distance and at the end of the day.

Harris was not quite able to match his indoor form while Freeman kept a tidy scoreline building.

Handicap adjusted scores at the end of the day had Freeman acknowledged as the 2018 winner of the memorial event, edging out Kilsby by a slim eight points.

Freeman’s name will be added to the shield to join past winners Brendan Donovan, Graham Lock and Len Bayley.
