TENNIS action continued across the region on the weekend, with Round 5 of the Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association contested.

This week in the women’s doubles ladder-leader Saints United held its position with a 4-2 set win over Glencoe.

Another 4-2 result was had between Moorak and West Gambier, with the latter unable to claim the points on its home courts.

Mil Lel took home the maximum points when Allendale East forfeited the match.

The match of the round saw a battle between second-placed Uniting Church and third-placed Reidy Park at the latter’s home courts.

But it was the guests who came away with the win to retain their position on the ladder, defeating Reidy four sets to two.

Reidy’s Rosie Collins and Chris Lloyd had a 6-2 win over Vanessa Maxwell and Shirley Hogg, while the only other success for the hosts was a 6-3 win by Collins and Bernadette Nash over Maxwell and Anne Goetze.

A closer match saw Uniting Church’s Maxwell and Vivienne Wilson with a 6-4 win against Collins and Kerry Dempsey, but the remaining three matches were solid victories to the guests.

At West the hosts were unlucky in their clash with Moorak, with a close 5-7 defeat to Anke Le Roux and Mandy Greyvenstein by Joanne Dennert and Priscilla Ferguson having the potential to bring the game count into play.

However, with four sets to Moorak at the end of the day to West’s two it was not the case.

Moorak’s Louise Paltridge and Shannon Pearson had a close 6-3 win over Zena Reiner and Michelle Van Niekerk.

Two close matches were also had when West’s Van Niekerk and Le Roux had a 6-4 win over Pearson and Dennert, while the same result saw the home team with another win when Reiner and Le Roux defeated Paltridge and Dennert to help narrow the margin in the end.

But it was not enough to deny Moorak the win.

The final match played on Saturday was at Olympic Park, where Saints United accounted for Glencoe four sets to two.

The closest game for the day saw Saints’ Deb Rutkowski and Rhondda Truscott with a 6-4 win over Angela Hann and Teresa Anderson, while the remaining victories for Saints were easier battles.

For Glencoe, a 6-1 win to Janine Amorosa and Anderson against Tasja Barelds and Truscott was the best result, while the second triumph was a closer 6-3 margin to Janine and Kate Amoroso when they played Barelds and Maureen Scanlon.
