Former resident aims for federal politics

SECOND ATTEMPT: Former Millicent High School student and Greens candidate Major Sumner AM is now standing for the Senate.

FORMER Millicent High School student and Greens candidate Major Sumner AM is making another attempt to enter federal politics.

He failed to win the seat of Mayo for the Greens in the federal by-election in August.

Mr Sumner has now received the Greens endorsement as its number two candidate on the senate ticket behind sitting senator Sarah Hanson-Young for the 2019 poll.

“It is an honour to stand with the Greens again and I look forward to being back on the campaign trail,” Mr Sumner said.

“If we look after our earth, it will look after us.

“We need more voices in Canberra standing up for caring for our community and country.”

Political insiders state the chances of Mr Sumner joining the senate are unlikely.

Mr Sumner has had a long involvement with Millicent and district schools through the Talkindjeri Dance Group.

Known widely as “Moogy”, the Ngarrinjeri elder is a world-renowned artist, performer and cultural ambassador and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2014.

Back in August, his preferences ensured the re-election of the Centre Alliance’s Rebekha Sharkie ahead of Liberal challenger Georgina Downer.

Published polls had suggested the Greens candidate would only receive 7pc of the primary vote.

However, the actual votes recorded at Mayo’s 79 polling booths showed a much higher figure.

His 7526 first preferences represented a 9.15pc share and an increase of 1.1pc for the Greens based on the 2016 general election.
