LIMESTONE Coast cheer squad, Purple Thunder Cheerleading has had recent success in the Australian Allstar Cheerleading Federation State Cheer and Dance series.

The competition, held at Titanium Arena in Adelaide from September 26 to 30, involved over 17,000 athletes of varied sporting backgrounds, ability and fitness levels.

Purple Thunder Cheerleading triumphed in the competition, with the male and female open coed team performing a near perfect routine, to claim the club’s first state title.

The squad also had success in the junior division, placing third against some tough competitors.

“Cheerleading competitions are loud, exciting and great fun, with a routine being performed every four to five minutes,” Purple Thunder Cheerleading representative Josie Flanagan said.

“Competing associations encourage one another when performing, which is rarely seen in other sports.

“We are one big community and it is always great to catch up with coaches and athletes from other clubs.”

The Purple Thunder cheer squad will be off to Adelaide again in November to attend another competition.

The club offers programs for males and females from five years to adults.

“We have been operating in Mount Gambier and training at Blue Lake Gymnastics Club for three years, with coaching staff having over 10 years experience,” Flanagan said.

“It is a big commitment for athletes and families as we have to travel to Adelaide or Melbourne to attend competitions, but is it worth all the hard work to come home with a state title.

“Cheerleading is an international sport growing at a rapid pace and you do not need to be flexible, a dancer or gymnast to be a cheerleader.”

Purple Thunder welcomes new athletes to come and try the sport when term four commences.
