Motorsport: Sand buggy club gears up for off road event

ON THE GAS: Robe’s Jason Peel will contest the upcoming off road racing event at Mumbannar.

THE Millicent Sand Buggy Club is gearing up for yet another successful off road racing event at Mumbannar.

The race – which proves popular with both entrants and spectators alike – will showcase some of the best talent from both South Australia and interstate.

Located just 30km East of Mount Gambier, along the Princess Highway, the track is a winding loop set amongst a picturesque backdrop of the local scrub.

Since the event’s inception, local racing legend Garry Turnbull has greeted the chequered flag first on the most occasions.

Turnbull has won three times, while also finishing runner-up once.

His V8 powered Aceco buggy has served him well and the wins prove its power and handling is second-to-none.

However, showing that power is not everything, Naracoorte’s Peter Tamblyn and his 1600cc buggy have also been on the outright podium twice.

Consistent laps and smooth driving ensures fast times at the short-course event and Tamblyn has also taken numerous class honours and podiums.

The natural sweeping terrain and jumps has also had two winners from the Trophy Trucks in the hands of the entertaining Greg Gartner from Penola in 2011 and Andy Murdoch of Lucindale in 2012.

Both of these Extreme 2wd vehicles are crowd favourites as they send dirt flying when they are thrown sideways across the race track.

A diverse group of vehicles are entered each year, which has seen a different racing format included.

This year’s event promises to showcase some wheel-to-wheel action through the day.

The race will this Saturday, May 19 and competitors will line up from 10am.
