TOP EFFORT: Victorian 100km Cycling Championship winner Angus Maddern.

ANGUS Maddern put in a top effort at the gruelling Victorian 100km Cycling Championship in Casterton last Sunday.

He was one of five Mount Gambier cyclists to contest the race.

Others to test their luck on the undulating 6km circuit were Jack Patzel, Daniel Herrewyn, Sean Angus and Luke Wight, but it was Maddern’s effort in the 100km race which was the highlight, as he took out the win for the event.

With cyclists needing to negotiate the short circuit 18 times to finish the race, a breakaway of two riders from the start were quickly rounded up, which was when Maddern decided to take the challenge into his own hands.

Maddern and another five riders held a strong breakaway for much of the day.

The group was then joined by three more riders, but constant uphill battles soon saw the breakaway caught.

After resting for a few laps, Maddern decided on another breakaway, this time with Anchor Point Cycling Team member Herrewyn.

With just two laps remaining, Maddern and Daniel Braudstein had gained a 23-second advantage over the main peleton and stayed ahead for a one-on-one sprint to the finish.

Maddern had plenty left in his legs and won the sprint to the finish to claim the Victorian Title.
