THE Mount Gambier Bowls Club’s Division 1 Red team has secured a grand final berth alongside Mount Gambier RSL Red after defeating Millicent in the preliminary on Sunday.

Played at the Mount Gambier RSL, the victors won two of the three rinks to take out the overall honours.

Tony Bowditch’s team of Gary McIntyre, Gary Hocking and Peter Radley held sway all day against Bryan Roper’s four to win 25-14, setting up a solid buffer over the Millicent side.

A good game saw Rebecca Gruar, Terry Bruhn, Brad Errock and Tony Renzi manage to hold on to a fast finishing Iain Campbell rink to also bag the win, with a narrow margin of 27-25.

Greg Carpenter’s team had a tough game against Terry Barnes and his team to go down by two shots.

However, this was not enough to prevent Mount Gambier from advancing to this Saturday’s grand final, which will be hosted by Millicent.

Friday Pennant

MOUNT Gambier bowlers also tasted success in the Friday Pennant preliminary final, with the Division 1 team defeating Mount Gambier RSL at Beachport.

In a tight affair, Mount Gambier was able to claim the win by a single shot.

Mavis Edgcumbe, Jan McCarthy, Barb Butchart and skipper Leanne Hentschke were in front of Beryl Messenger’s team after 21 ends.

However, the RSL side proved too strong in the last few ends and won 24-16.

This left it up to Beryl Versluis’ rink of Gaylene Leggett, Judy Saint and Margaret Marshall.

CHAMPION’S SMILES: Mount Gambier Bowls Club’s Brad Errock and Rebecca Gruar won the men’s and women’s titles at Saturday’s Champion of Champions Singles event held at the Millicent Bowls Club.

Fortunately, they were up to the fight and defeated Veronica Opie’s four 29-20.

This margin gave Mount Gambier its narrow victory, with the team to now play Port MacDonnell in the grand final on Friday at the Mount Gambier RSL.

Champion of Champion Singles

ON Saturday the Mount Gambier Bowls Club singles champions headed to Millicent to play in the Champion of Champion event.

This saw the club take out both the men’s and women’s titles, with young-guns of the club Brad Errock and Rebecca Gruar holding their nerve to take out the grand final victories.

Errock had a day out to win his way into the men’s final against Mount Gambier RSL’s champion bowler Andy Ashby.

In a classic contest, Brad’s weight control in difficult conditions saw him victorious 25-21.

In the women’s event, Gruar bowled steadily all day in windy conditions to win her way into the grand final.

In a tight game, she held her nerve and bowled impressively against Kingston’s highly credentialed Helen Vauser to win 25-20.
