Tigers 6 d Central 3

ON paper Central should have walked away with the win in Saturday’s Mount Gambier and District Baseball League heritage game against Tigers, as pitcher Dylan Chuck completed an impressive 16 strike outs for the day.

Both teams looked the part, donning their heritage tops and drawing a large crowd, but it was Tigers who found momentum early and powered on for an eventual 6-3 victory.

Tigers were scoreless in the first innings, but got their eye on the ball in the second as Jesse Foster hit deep to centre for a double base hit, before scoring on a single from Dyllan Lane.

He was joined by Lane, who scored on a hit from Alex Harkness, while Joe Sims and Harkness also made it home on Brayden Morton’s double.

This saw Tigers with their first four runs.

The next two came in the fourth inning, when Foster got on from a fielding error and Steve Frost advanced him to second, before both players scored on a hit from Harkness, who was left stranded.

The runs stopped from there on for Tigers, as Central’s Chuck only allowed one more safe hit to Morton.

Central came out hitting, but were unable to pick a gap in the field.

It secured its first two runs in the fifth, when Brad Lynagh got on base and advanced on a single from Koby Chant, before being moved on and then scoring on a hit and fielding error.

Chant also seized the opportunity to cross the home plate on Chuck’s wild pitch.

Their third run came in the seventh inning, with Chant claiming his second run.

However, it was not enough to prevent Tigers from claiming the heritage match honours.

South 8 d Federal 5

FEDERAL was unlucky in its clash with South on the weekend, as it was out-hit on the day to go down by three runs.

South showed its maturity in the field, only picking up one error, while Federal’s five errors allowed the Indians to score four of their eight runs.

Federal scored four runs in the third inning, when Clay Carpenter was walked and moved around on Alex Reppin’s single.

Both players were then advanced on Nathan Taylor’s single, with Carpenter scoring on a wild pitch.

Chant sacrificed himself as he hit to left scoring Reppin and then Kane McMillan scored Taylor who advanced on Alex Pearson’s hit, giving Federal loaded bases and Jack Howard picked a walk to first which scored McMillan.

Federal’s fifth and final run came in the fifth inning, after McMillan doubled to centre and advanced home on Josh Wilsmore’s double.

However, despite a solid effort, South came out on a mission and took control of the game.

The side did not add to its tally until the fifth, when a dropped fly got Ben Nash on base and he advanced on a passed ball by Federal’s catcher.

Ryan Placucci should have been sent back to the dug out after his strikeout, but another passed ball saw him with the opportunity to take first.

Nash took advantage of an attempt to stop a stolen base and he crossed the home plate, before Jesse Balshaw bunted and advanced Placucci who scored on Isaacson.

The next three runs were earned by South, but errors kept coming for Federal and the Indians ran away with the game.
