Bowls: Mount Gambier Red finishes on top

Division 1

Mount Gambier Red 101/16 d Mount Gambier RSL Blue 55/0

MOUNT Gambier Red has finished on top of the Lower South East Bowling Association Open Pennant ladder for its first time in many years.

This was thanks to a convincing win over Mount Gambier RSL Blue on Saturday, which was enough to seal the deal for the side.

Leading Mount Gambier was Gary McIntyre, Gary Hocking, Peter Radley and Tony Bowditch, who claimed a solid 39-17 shot win against Ron Ploenges’ four.

Bec Gruar, Terry Bruhn, Brad Errock and Tony Renzi also finished well, defeating Glenn Wright’s team 34-19.

Not to be out done, John Reppin, Bryan Vorwerk, Peter Reppin and Greg Carpenter recorded a credible 28-19 shot victory over Strawb Masters’ four.

Mount Gambier Blue 73/16 d Naracoorte 58/0

A MASSIVE effort saw the Mount Gambier Blue team defeat third-placed Naracoorte on the their home rinks.

Despite being out of finals contention going into the day, Brian Francis, John Hughes, Gary Widdison and Leanne Hentschke hit hard to secure a 28-19 shot win over Ron Garton’s team.

This was backed up by Ray Hutchesson, Geoff Collins, David Babb and Jeff England, who defeated Graham East’s four 24-19.

A closer encounter saw Tim Radley, Bill Bremner, Steve Farrell and Kym Jones go up against Ian Williams’ rink, with the Mount Gambier side taking the win narrowly, 21-20.

Division 2

Mount Gambier RSL Blue 74/14 d Mount Gambier 58/2

MOUNT Gambier’s Division 2 team suffered at the hands of Mount Gambier RSL Blue in Saturday’s last minor round for the Open Pennant competition.

Kristy Errock skippered the only successful team for the day, as she led Jack Davey, Terry Seiler and Perria Davis to a solid 31-16 win.

Division 3

Mount Gambier 76/14 d Naracoorte 59/2

DIVISION 3 welcomed Naracoorte to its rinks and although it won the day with two rinks, it misses out on finals by shot count.

William Duncan, Maria Stabler, Don Fraser and Carlo Bertetic won their match-up 31-21, while Ren Davis, Steve Smith, Rex Klaassens and George Kuhl claimed a 25-14 victory.

A win was not on the cards for John Kentish’s team, as it went down by a small margin.

Division 4

Mount Gambier 71/13 d Beachport 68/3

MOUNT Gambier’s Division 4 team went out with a bang as it claimed the win over the top side Beachport.

Despite being well out of finals contention, this win caused Beachport to be knocked to second on the ladder.

The standout rink for the day was that of William Knowles, Milton Chant, Athol Malseed and Darryl Little, who won with a score of 32-18.

This was backed up by Kevin McGrath and his team, which managed to settle for a draw and help its team to the overall win.
