Football: Clubs chase first victory

LOOKING FOR MORE: South Gambier’s Tess Clark will look to push ahead and help South Gambier to another victory in the 2018 Limestone Coast Women’s Football League season.

THE Limestone Coast Women’s Football League ladder is starting to take shape after two rounds of competition, with Millicent claiming the honours and leading the pack, ahead of Kybybolite and South Gambier, largely due to its massive win in Round 1.

Last week saw closer games across the board, but three sides are yet to record a win.

Both West Gambier and North Gambier are without wins, but drew last week in an exciting contest.

Below them the win-less Glencoe sits on the bottom of the ladder, but with far better percentage than the Tigers.

This week sees the chance for another shake up, with some interesting clashes set down for McDonald Park tonight.

The twilight fixture kicks off at 5.30pm with North Gambier facing off against Glencoe.

It will be a big test for the Tigers to see if they remain off the bottom of the ladder, but with Glencoe’s superior percentage, it is a must win for North, who suffered at the hands of a rampant Millicent back in Round 1.

But they bounced back last week against West with a draw, which should provide some positives going forward for the young side.

The All Stars took the game up to Millicent last round and while they only scored one behind, they held the Saints to a total of 16 points, as opposed to their 72 points against the Tigers in Round 1.

That statistic alone tips the scales in Glencoe’s favour, but with the effort from the Tigers last week, nothing can be taken for granted.

The second game kicks off at 6.40pm with South Gambier facing West Gambier.

The Roos are yet to record a win, with their only draw last week against North, while the Demons managed a comfortable 30-point victory over East Gambier last round.

As the reigning premiers, the Demons will want to keep that momentum going, with plenty of challengers stepping up this season, specifically in the form of Millicent and Kybybolite, with the latter having the better of them in Round 1.

West suffered a 15-point loss in Round 1, but bounced back last week for the draw, although the Demons are sure to be a tougher opponent than the Tigers were.

It will be an important game for South to win so the top two sides in Millicent and Kybybolite do not open too much of a margin as the short season progresses.

Following that game at 7.50pm, East Gambier will play host to Kybybolite, with the home-ground advantage just what the Bulldogs need.

Kybybolite has proven a tough customer in its first year, with a seven-point victory over South to kick off the season, followed by a 34-point win over Kalangadoo last week.

They are certainly shaping up as one of the top teams in the competition, currently in second place, while the Bulldogs sit down in fourth after just the one win.

East went down by 30 points to South last week and will want to bounce back from that, but it will be a huge task if they are to overrun Kybybolite.

Finally Millicent will take on Kalangadoo at 9pm.

After the first round it appeared the Saints could run away with the competition, when they recorded an unprecedented 72 points.

However, last week they were brought back to earth somewhat, although still managed to craft a comfortable 15-point victory over Glencoe.

But Kalangadoo has also tasted success this season, with its 15-point Round 1 win over West.

However, with the likes of league leading goal kickers Kristie Rowe and Olivia Fuller with seven goals between them in Round 1 alone, the Saints have a formidable lineup and will take a lot of beating.

It will certainly be a tough task for the Magpies, with Millicent favourite to claim the win.
