Golf: Women return from break

BACK IN ACTION: Women kicked off their 2018 season at the Attamurra golf course last week, with Libby Altschwager finishing runner-up to Chris Galpin.

THE Mount Gambier Golf Club women returned to their weekly competitions for 2018 last Wednesday after a six-week break.

The course was in great condition, with fairways and greens all running true.

The weather was cool, with the blustery winds challenging the 36 entrants in the first round of the Summer Salver, sponsored by life member Isobel Phillips.

After a brief absence from the course, Chris Galpin had a wonderful round with 94-26-68 and easily won the day.

Libby Altschwager was runner-up on a count-back from Di Norman, with another commendable score of 96-25-71.

Featuring in the ball run-down were Norman, Lois Harvey, Yvonne Shirley, Heather Barry, Kate McCormick and Di O’Donnell.

The long drive winners went to O’Donnell in A Grade, Carol Davis in B Grade and Lyn Hudson in C Grade.

Faye Mainwaring had a heart-stopping shot, measuring 36 mm from the pin on the picturesque eighth hole to win the pro-shot, collecting three balls for her effort.

A new format of results incorporating one division will be trialled over the next month or so when a decision will be made as to what format the women will use in 2018.

Today’s competition is the second round of the Summer Salver, played as a stableford.
