PENOLA will look to back up its batting performance when it takes to McCorquindale Park with ball in hand for day two of its Barber Shield clash with East Gambier.

Recording a credible 188 runs in the opening day, the Eagles will now be faced with the task of holding the Bulldogs’ batsmen at bay.

And the hosts will be more than capable of doing just that, with David Somerfield already claiming the first wicket for the innings last week.

Somerfield will be out to to add to this count tomorrow and will be eager to replicate his five-wicket haul from the previous round against Mil Lel.

He will be joined by the likes of Michael Waters, Lewis March and Curt Evans, who all bagged wickets last round.

East sit on 1/12 overnight, with Nathan Gore out after three runs last weekend.

Darren Whitehorn and Emerson Marks will open with at the crease for the Bulldogs and will hope to provide a strong foundation going into the day.

Whitehorn made a solid 59 runs back in Round 7 and he will be out to repeat this against the Eagles.

Captain Dion Stratford’s 78 runs against West Gambier was the deciding factor in his team’s first victory and he will look to lead by example once again, while Patrick Glynn holds the top score for the Bulldogs this season and will hope to contribute again this week.

With last round’s upset win over the Roos fresh on their minds, East will need to bring its A-game if it is to create another stir in the Barber Shield competition.

However, the Eagles will likely be too strong on their home ground and will take the points for Round 9.
