Archery: Archers keep cool on outdoor return

CLOSE RESULTS: Competition returned to Corriedale Park on Sunday, with the Blue Lake Archers’ World Archery round a closely fought contest.

BLUE Lake Archers returned to outdoor rounds this week after the extreme heat the previous Sunday forced the club into the rare position of having to implement the hot weather policy and cancel day’s competition.

An idyllic start to the conditions for the World Archery 60/900 round were slowly eroded as a cross wind built during the afternoon.

The score sheets for the day showed performance was down across the board, with none of the eight archers able to give the handicap benchmark score of 900 points a fright.

Kicking off at the initial 60 metre distance, Ben Kilsby opened his account with an all-gold end and he proceeded to stamp his claim for the best off-the-bow score recorded on the day.

In defiance of the strengthening wind Paul Freeman, Kilsby and Graham Lock were able to claim all-gold ends at each of the three distances.

A smattering of lower scored arrows snuck in on the score sheets at the 50 metre range as brief gusts caught out the archers.

Peter Austin and Ian Perry were able to add to the day’s all-gold tally once the group hit the final 40-metre distance.

When the adjustment for handicap margins were added in, Freeman found himself back in top spot but had been hotly pursued by Austin, who was only seven points behind.
