Golf: Collins braves the heat

DUE to the extreme heat on Saturday, a smaller than usual field greeted the starter at the Blue Lake Golf Links, but it did not stop Niki Collins from lighting up the course and securing the overall victory on 42 points.

Kane Baldwin shot to the top in A Grade after having a sensational day on the course, but he did have to edge out the consistent Trevor Little on a count-back after both finished on 40 points.

Coming home in third place was Anthony Williams on 39 after a count-back.

In B Grade and not to far away from taking out the overall prize was Mount Gambier Golf Club member Hayden Dow, who shot a terrific score of 41 points.

In second place was Rostyn McMahon with 39 and coming home in third place after a count-back was Fred Knight on 38.

In a battle for the ages, C Grade’s Brian Vawser knocked out young junior Callum Harvey on a count-back after both finished the day on 39 points, with Gavin Sparrow a shot further back.

Balls were payed down to 36 points with winners including Wayne Dunford, Michael Egan, David Johnston, Sam Letizia, Sean Sawyer, Setio Shanahan, Victorius Smith, David Goldspring, Timothy Bates, Colin Ferguson.

John Millhouse claimed a birdie on the fifth hole, while nearest-the-pin on the 14th was Timothy Bates.

The best front nine went to Niki Collins, while Kane Baldwin claimed an eagle on the 17th.

For Baldwin it was enough to claim the shot-of-the-day and he may be the only person to have holed out on the 17th hole at the Blue Lake Golf Links.

Due to the 17th being made in to a par three, Baldwin attacked the pin on the short hole of just over 100m and holed out, collecting a handy $1000 cash for his troubles.

No women’s competition was played, with the hole-in-one jackpot now $1000.
