THE Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club recently completed three more of its club championship events, with the finals contested in front of a keen audience.

Kym Franklin continued her stellar season as she won the women’s club championship singles from Fiona Pearson.

With 17 entries in this year’s event, Franklin had a tight preliminary final which saw her score a three on the last end to overcome Glenda Dalton 21-20.

For Pearson, she defeated last year’s singles champion Shirley McIntyre with a solid 21-15 margin.

Neither of the talented finalists, who had both come to outdoor bowls from the indoor scene, had won an outdoor club championship going into the decider.

Franklin settled quickly in the final and raced ahead to a 10-2 lead.

Pearson managed to keep in the match with a scattering of three three’s, but Franklin was in determined control.

She kept the score moving along steadily and won convincingly, 25-15.

Franklin will go on to contest the Champion of Champion Singles on Sunday, March 17 at Millicent.

Men’s Veteran Singles

THE heat-affected preliminary rounds saw Noel Miller and Bob Solly emerge as the finalists for the men’s veteran singles championship.

Miller defeated Ron Ploenges in a close contest 21-20, while Solly claimed a 21-16 shot win over Wally Brown to make the final.

In the final Miller started strong, before Solly had a run, scoring mostly singles.

Miller then dominated and stormed home to take out the title 21-7.

The Veteran Singles Champion of Champions will be played on April 17 at Millicent.

Men’s Pairs

THE 2018 men’s championship pairs was taken out by Rex Heins and Deane Wilkinson after they accounted for Andrew Simpson and Gary Bowering in the final 13-8.

A total of 24 pairs contested the championship and after three qualifying rounds, the semi-finals saw Simpson and Bowering defeat John Maher and Al White 13-7, while Heins and Wilkinson took care of Chris Waugh and Jason Kuring 10-5.

In the final, Wilkinson and Heins hit hard early to score two fours on the second and third ends.

Despite winning more ends in the 15-end game, Simpson and Bowering were held to only singles and were unable to bridge the gap.

This is Heins first pairs title at the Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club, while it is Wilkinson’s third, after having previously won with Neil Tobin.

The Champion of Champion Men’s Pairs will be played at Kingston on February 25.
