Bowls: Busy week for Bay bowlers

PAIRS CHAMPIONS: Port MacDonnell Bowling Club Championship Pairs winners Bill and Chris Richards are joined by runners-up Adam Wilson and Peter Bruhn following the final played on Sunday.

Champions crowned

CHRIS and Bill Richards were crowned the 2018 Championship Pairs winners on Sunday.

Defeating Peter Bruhn and Adam Wilson in the final, the two duos engaged in a close match with tight heads all the way through.

A couple of up shots from Bill Richards which came off had a big bearing on the end result, which saw experience and steadiness take out the title.

Mixed bag in Friday Pennant

IT was a mixed bag of results for the Port MacDonnell Bowling Club’s Friday Pennant teams last week.

After returning for the first round following the Christmas break, the Division 1 side hosted Penola for an overall win.

Winning one of the two rinks, the Bay had the shots required to take out the win, 52/12 to 40/2.

The Division 2 team was not as lucky, as it travelled to play Naracoorte RSL.

Returning home with a draw and a loss, Port MacDonnell went down by 10 shots at the end of the day with a score of 43/1 to Naracoorte’s 53/13.

Division 3 recorded the second win for the Bay, as it hosted Beachport Blue for a close 49/12 to 40/2 victory.

Night owls

THE first night of the six-week night owls series took place at the Port MacDonnell Bowling Club last Tuesday night.

A field of 60 keen competitors attended the event, with four teams finishing with two wins on the night.

Lyn Vanderley, Peter Sleep and Graham Blackall were the highest scoring team.

KEEN BOWLER: Port MacDonnell Bowling Club’s Shirley Taylor celebrated her 89th birthday recently, but shows no sign of slowing down, as she continues to be heavily involved in various bowling competitions throughout the South East.

Popular member celebrates

The Port MacDonnell Bowling Club has also recently celebrated the 89th birthday of member Shirley Taylor.

Age is just a number for Taylor, who can still play a good game of bowls, which she demonstrated in her recent involvement in the winning Championship Fours team.

She continues to play bowls anywhere from three to four times a week and still plays in the Pennant side.

She also plays as part of other clubs around the South East and over the border.

At the club she is one of the first to be up and doing dishes and is part of a catering group.

Taylor is very popular with all members and they hope she continues to be part of the Port MacDonnell Bowling Club for many years to come.
